Concrete chimney caps often crack allowing small amounts of water to enter the chimney causing extensive damage. Seal these cracks as soon as possible.

Watch for ice dam formation on the roof's edge where the roof overhangs the outside walls. Ice dams allow water to be forced under the shingles and can be a source of extensive damage.

Watch for areas behind chimneys where snow and ice can accumulate until a leak develops. Divert water away if possible.

Roof skylights are prone to leaking. Inspect the skylights annually and caulk the flashings.
